NASA's Crew 7 Returns After 197 Days in Space Station
NASA's Crew 7 astronauts, representing four different space agencies, safely returned to Earth after a 197-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The crew, comprised of NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen, JAXA astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov, launched on August 26, 2023, and returned on March 11, 2024.
The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, responsible for the crew's transportation, was undocked from the ISS at 11:20 a.m. ET on March 11 and splashed down off the coast of Pensacola, Florida at 5:47 a.m. ET. The mission aimed to conduct scientific experiments and technology demonstrations to benefit Earth and prepare for future space missions.
During their six-month stay on the ISS, Crew 7 achieved significant scientific milestones, including a study on the impact of spaceflight on immune function. They also contributed to wastewater treatment by developing methods to eliminate contaminants. Additionally, the crew explored sustainable food production in space by growing food on the station.
In a tweet, NASA stated, "And splashdown! #Crew7 has returned to Earth after spending nearly six months aboard the @Space_Station conducting science and research". SpaceX also confirmed the successful splashdown with a tweet that read, 'Splashdown of Dragon confirmed – welcome back to Earth'.
The team's endeavors extended beyond the ISS as they deployed two CubeSats, cost-effective alternatives to traditional satellites, during their mission. The successful return of Crew 7 marks another achievement in international collaboration in space exploration.
